Health Inequalities

The Highland CPP short life working group on health inequalities are pleased to share their first report on health inequalities in Highland.

Health inequalities are systematic, unjust and preventable differences in health between different groups of people[i]. The fundamental causes of health inequalities are the unequal distribution of income, power, wealth and opportunity which shape access to factors which determine health e.g.

  • Quality education
  • Safe housing
  • Fair work and income
  • Accessible healthcare

The report illustrates overarching measures of health inequalities in Highland, and presents indicators organised by the eight Marmot principles[ii], which describe evidence-based areas of action for reducing health inequalities.

It is intended that this supports partners to:

  • identify areas of need for action
  • monitor health inequalities in Highland
